Accessible Communication Through Realtime Text
Not every Deaf or hard-of-hearing individual uses American Sign Language. For those who prefer written access to spoken communication, speech-to-text services can provide an important accommodation.
Hands Up Interpreting & Consulting offers CART and TypeWell services to support communication access in educational, workplace, and community settings.
CART: Communication Access Realtime Translation
CART provides a near-verbatim, realtime text representation of spoken communication.
A trained CART provider uses specialized technology to convert speech into readable text, allowing participants to follow lectures, presentations, meetings, and other spoken communication.
Common applications include:
- College and university lectures
- K–12 educational settings
- Conferences and professional development
- Workplace meetings
- Public presentations and events
TypeWell Transcription
TypeWell is a meaning-for-meaning speech-to-text service that presents spoken information in clear, organized written form.
Rather than attempting to capture every spoken word, a trained TypeWell transcriber conveys the meaning of the discussion, including important details and relevant contextual information.
Common applications include:
- Classroom instruction
- Postsecondary education
- Training sessions
- Workplace meetings
- Educational programs
CART vs. TypeWell: Which Service Is Right for You?
CART is generally appropriate when a near-verbatim real-time record of spoken communication is needed.
TypeWell offers a meaning-for-meaning transcript intended to make spoken information easy to follow and understand.
The most appropriate service depends on the individual’s communication preferences, accommodation needs, and the setting.
